How to Describe Yourself on a Dating Site
Hardly anyone likes to write about themselves in any context. It feels awkward and we never know what to say. The hardest thing is when a dating profile asks us to write up an “About Me” section where we describe ourselves. What’s best to include in this section? How can we write an effective description for a dating site? Below are some ideas to get you started:
Table of Contents
1. Keep it Simple
The first thing is to remember that this section is not a space in which to tell your entire life story. Most people do not have the attention span to read anything more than a few sentences on these types of platforms. Don’t forget that depending on what kind of platform you’re using, yours might be the 10th, 20th or even 100th profile they’ve looked at that day. Simple is perfect.
2. Be Honest
There’s an assumption people make that everyone with an online dating profile is lying somehow. It’s hard for people to imagine that anything they’re reading could be true when they’re not dealing with someone in person. While there are liars online, don’t forget that it’s just as easy to lie about many important things in person as it is online.
At any rate, keep your own profile honest. If you follow the first piece of advice, then being honest shouldn’t be a problem since where there is less detail, there is less chance for lies and embellishments to be present.
3. Use Humor
You don’t need to be a comic genius or anything, but injecting a little bit of humor will never do you any harm. You could make a little joke about yourself, or your job — Accountant: Fear not! We’re not as boring as people say! — or some other aspect of yourself. It demonstrates intelligence, maturity, and that you’re not a total stick in the mud, which people tend to like very much.
4. Let a Photo Handle the Physical Side
Describing oneself physically is a big stumbling block for many people looking at online dating. Therefore, let some real pictures do that for you. That way, you don’t have to include any physical descriptions and you can just let people make up their mind based on your photos. If you describe it with words, you just leave yourself open for people to think you might be lying or embellishing if they feel your words don’t match reality.
5. Focus on Personality and What You’re Looking For
With the previous point in mind. It follows that it’s a good idea for you to focus on your character, and describe what you’re looking for in another person when writing your “About Me” section.
Give some simple adjectives for your personality: adventurous, shy, outgoing, quiet… and then tell your audience what you’re after: looking for love; searching for a soul mate; seeking friendships; looking out for no-strings-attached fun… and so on. Letting others know what you’re looking for is a more effective way to make a connection than just a physical description.
Hopefully these tips will help make your self-description more engaging and effective in generating matches and connections.
