LGBTQ+ User Created “Ads” for Dating
3 million members worldwide
40% Male | 60% Female
Lex is a unique online dating experience with a story fit for the modern age. It started as an Instagram page called PERSONALS, run by Kelly Rakowski. Kelly was looking to create an alternative to the “swipe-culture” of online dating encouraged by the likes of Tinder and Bumble.
To add to that, Kelly was inspired by personal ads of On Our Backs, a women-run erotica magazine from the 80s and 90s. Looking to expand this growing space for the LGBTQ+ community, Kelly eventually founded “Lex is Dating” – now simply known as “Lex.” This mobile dating application seeks to compete against the big names in online dating by encouraging a personal touch.
But with so much competition, can Lex find its niche? We created a profile to find out! Read our review to see if Lex really is helping others find a way to date in this modern era.
Dating app for LGBTQ+
Text-centered social app
Free to use
Not specifically for dating
Lex is completely free to use!
Signing up for Lex is incredibly simple and will likely take you no more than a few minutes. It starts when you download the app, available on iOS and Android. After this, you can use a phone number to sign up or link your existing Instagram account.
After accepting the terms and conditions of the app, you’ll be guided to basic profile creation. This involves some basic information, such as name, age, and preferred pronouns. You can also include a short bio to provide further information about yourself.
After this is done, you can set your location. This is important because it will ensure the app’s geolocation is correct. You will then be presented with ads posted by people in your area within the last 30 days, and you’re free to get started!
Lex is a free dating service, so there aren’t any paywalls within the service like other dating platforms. All members have access to the same features, services, and benefits.
The platform boasts around 3 million followers, with members across the globe. While this is true, Lex is currently most popular at home in the United States, where many members are from. The age range of users tends to be in their 20s and 30s, though many users are either Gen Z or young millennials.
Lex, like PERSONALS before it, describes itself as a place social-media app for connecting Queer lovers and friends. The platform is run by a team of entirely Queer people, ensuring Lex is always a safe space working for the good of its members.
As of 2022, Lex describes itself as a space for “Queer, trans, gender non-conforming, two sprites, & non-binary ppl. For Meeting lovers & friends.” This language expansion is a testament to Lex’s continued evolution towards a wider community of love and acceptance.

While Lex is committed to building relationships through honest communication, this philosophy results in a simple conversational approach. Only private chats are available, allowing users to communicate freely with other users in this manner.
It isn’t possible to send photos or have video chats over the platform so some users may be frustrated by the lack of options. This is the intention of Lex, however, so those using the platform typically enjoy the emphasis on writing and talking as a way to get to know others. Plus, moving over to Instagram or other social media applications is always possible if both parties desire it.
Lex was built from the ground up as a mobile application, so the apps are excellent on iOS and Android. The design is focused on functionality and minimalism, keeping to a straightforward interface and a generally two-tone color pallet.
To that end, Lex does not offer services over a website, so users must stick to their phones. The only use of the Lex website is as a redirect to download the app.
Lex is a unique project that grew from the community it caters to. Taking inspiration from the personal ads of women-run erotica magazines of the pre-internet age, Lex is a dating service that understands the history it comes from.
By bringing that tradition into the modern era, Lex seeks to keep a rich piece of queer history not just alive but vibrantly thriving in a digital space. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, then Lex might be the perfect dating app to try next.
